As the winter meetings wrap up some new Reds fans would be concerned with the lack of moves made by management. I know I did during the past two meetings. I mean how can you get better if you are not shopping for new talent? This is where I started the phrase “In Jockety we trust” because if you can’t take the man who has rebuilt more than a few teams, put together the core of a World Series team like the Cardinals (that they are still enjoying) and team that has come in 1st place in the central a few times here recently. Then you are being too hard yourself and him. He’s earned the street cred to shop any way he likes, and that’s usually not at the Winter Meetings.
Some good news did come out of this time though. We dumped our multi-million tommy john case known as Ryan Madison to the Angels (I would use some profane language here, but I like keeping it clean when I can) We got Broxton figured out, and we get closer and close to getting Ludwick signed for another year. Ludwick will be an interesting one to see who caves, after a great year he’s proven that he’s got the talent to do big things, which means more money. If he was going to test the market this would be the time. In his case it’s not so much money as it is years in my opinion. As I don’t expect him to match this year’s run consistently in the years that come.
Now who’s got Baseball America’s Team of the Year? Oh that’s right we do! Simply put this means we are playing the game right and are doing things the way that they should be done. It means that real baseball people believe that the Reds are going to compete in the years that come. It’s no longer a fluke, but does it mean we can pull off a World Series or if the organization can finally land the plane on a All Star Game in Cincy? Time will tell.
Walt drove the 2 hours to come to Indy to save money.
He used is Hyatt points to pay for his hotel room.
He took his winter meeting crew to subway instead of St. Elmo’s Steak house to keep it in perspective.
And we’re suprised it’s day 3 of the meetings and he hasn’t done anything? I’m not.
As someone else wrote earlier today “Walt’s waiting for the phone to ring, because he’s not paying for outbound calls”
He’s told us that it’s going to be a budget watching year.
He told us that we’re not going to do a lot this off season.
So here we are toward the end of the Winter Meetings and all I can read from Reds bloggers and some reporters is complaints over the Reds not doing anything other than drinking the coffee. Why? Go enjoy Indy, have a steak, drink a beer, enjoy a show, visit the Speedway and then go home.
I’m watching the MLB.com coverage of the winter meetings and they are even complaining that EVERYONE is quiet so the Reds should be in perspective dead.
We did have a little news about Gomes, a completely nuts rumor about Tejada, maybe something about the Brewers Counsell which looks like a good fit, and Mariner’s Izturis who I’m on the fence with.
So Reds fans relax, this doesn’t mean anything, if we go the whole offseason with no real news then we’ve got issues. No news at the winter meetings doesnt’ mean a whole lot.
It’s December in middle America and as the work begins to slow down for the end of the year cleanup of the financials and questions on how we shut down the business for the next few months till business picks up again in spring. It’s really the time that baseball picks back up for a little while with news coming out of the winter meetings in Las Vegas, NV. I can’t help but wonder what changes the leaders of the reds will be making during this time. They managed to pick up Ramon Hernandez in a deal that includes Ryan Freel. Personally I’m going to miss Ryan. I always thought he was meant for a Reds uniform, but trades happen.
The news wire has Jockety looking for a right handed long ball hitter that can play outfield.
Strange…didn’t we already have that in spades before? Okay so most of them were lefty’s…
Who would you like to see join the team?
